OpenAI unveiled Dots at its DevDay developer conference in San Francisco on September 29, 2026 — a new kind of AI agent that keeps working toward your goals around the clock instead of waiting for your next prompt. Each dot runs on GPT-6 Astra, gets its own cloud computer and browser, and can connect to more than 4,000 apps to carry out multi-step tasks like fixing software bugs and building websites (The American News).

The launch lands three weeks after Meta's free Muse agent overtook ChatGPT as the most downloaded app, setting up a direct contest over who runs the assistant on your workday (Seoul Economic Daily / AFP).

Why it matters

This is OpenAI selling AI as a worker rather than a chatbot. Pro and Business Premium subscribers just got an always-on helper included. The race is now Meta's free Muse vs. OpenAI's premium Dots — and the winner may be decided by who you trust with continuous access to your apps.
